In 2015 Nissan launched a gamification strategy for their electric car (Nissan Leaf). The gamification consisted on creating a regional dashboard were each owner could compare his/her performance with other drivers. Then each one would receive a medal according to their performance (bronze, silver, gold, platinum). In addition to the medals you could download an app to your smartphone and enjoy some other benefits such as communicate and send commands to your car through your smartphone (for example turn on the A/C), know the status of your car (know if you need to charge it soon), set reminders and timers, etc.
The objective of this gamification strategy was to create loyalty in the customers by giving them special features. This also encouraged the drivers to be more efficient and better drivers. Another important feature is that it lets you compare your performance with global metrics, which increases the sense of competition among users and further motivates them to improve their responsible driving skills.
Personally I consider it an innovative way to use gamification to motivate and improve user's driving, while generating satisfaction in them and recognition of the Nissan brand.
